Join AAJA Seattle in the first meetup of IRE Seattle!

IRE logo

The well-known and well-regarded Investigative Reporters (IRE) and Editors are great friends of AAJA. In fact, thanks to a recent partnership, IRE and AAJA members were able to attend each others’ conferences in 2014 at member rates!

So it’s a pleasure for our chapter to support a new Seattle-area branch of the investigative reporting organization.

The new branch will have its first mixer on Jan. 21 at The Diller Room, 1224 First Ave., Seattle. Besides mingling with journalists and learning more about IRE, attendees will also get to drink a special mixed beverage for the event, The Watchdog.

For more details and to get further updates, go to the group’s page.

Spend your summer with AAJA Seattle!

Contrary to what our current weather may suggest, summer is just around the corner. And with that comes a few AAJA events and we hope you’ll join us!
Walk for Rice
Our first event is Walk for Rice on June 28 from 8 a.m. to noon.
We’ve formed an AAJA Seattle team to participate in this annual fundraiser, which features a 2.5-mile walk or run at Seward Park in Seattle, to help raise money for the Asian Counseling and Referral Service’s (ACRS) Food Bank. The food bank serves more than 5,000 low-income people, who make more than 120,000 visits, each year and is also the only food bank in the area regularly providing cultural staples of the Asian Pacific American diet, like rice, tofu and soy milk.
To find our team, click here. From there, you can join our team by clicking the blue “Join Our Team” button on the right side of the page. Our goal is to have at least 10 members. WE STILL NEED TEAM MEMBERS! Family and friends are also invited to join.
If you cannot make it to the event, you can still contribute by donating on our AAJA Seattle team page and clicking on individual team members’ pages to donate through their pages.
Chapter secretary Samatha Pak is the AAJA Seattle team captain for the fundraiser, so if you have any questions, please let her know (! A Facebook event page has also been created for our team, which could be used to keep track of those planning to attend, coordinate carpools to the event, fundraising ideas, etc.

Light lunch will be included. Attendees are highly encouraged to stay the entire afternoon and attend the three workshops with local journalists from various broadcast, print, and radio media.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to speed-network with various journalists during the 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 1 – 2 p.m. time slots. These 8-minute are booked in advance and are first come first serve.

*You will be emailed a link to book your 8-minute speed-networking meetings after you register.

This event is organized by AAJA Seattle, sponsored by the Kellogg Foundation and hosted by The Seattle Times.

Workshop Sessions

1) Straight talk how to get in the morning paper/evening news
When you pitch a story to a news organization, do you know whom you’re contacting? If you got a call for a quote today, would you be camera-ready? Learn about how a newsroom works, and why knowing which reporter to contact could be your best bet in getting your story told.
Essex Porter, reporter, KIRO TV
Christine Clarridge, reporter, The Seattle Times
Lisa Pemberton, reporter/columnist, The Olympian
Chris Casquejo, reporter CCTV

2) Crafting your press release, making your pitch
Let’s look at the anatomy of a press release, what works and what doesn’t work, and learn how to write a clear message that will resonate. And learn how to avoid unconscious bias when pitching your stories to various media, and how to identify it when you’re being interviewed.
Imelda Dulcich, independent public relations and social media specialist, Executive Director Newcastle Chamber of Commerce
Gabrielle Kazuko Namura, media relations manager, Seattle Opera
Owen Lei, communications director, Asian Counseling and Referral Service, adjunct faculty Seattle University
Kevin Henry, cultural diversity/media relations, the City of Bellevue

3) Op-ed writing tutorial
As a person involved with a nonprofit, you may be called upon to write an editorial, or you may find that writing your story as an opinion piece may be the most effective way to get your story told. What are some helpful tips for writing a good guest op-ed?
Sharon Chan, opinion editor, Seattle Times
Travis Quezon, editor-in-chief, International Examiner
Maria Lamarca Anderson, communications director Youth Eastside Services
