Northwest Journalists of Color Scholarship

Launched in 1986 by the Seattle chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association, the Northwest Journalists of Color scholarship is aimed at increasing the pipeline of minorities pursuing careers in media. Since its inception, more than 100 students have received grants to support their studies, and many have gone on to work in the media, including The Seattle Times, The Los Angeles Times, CBS News and MSN.com. Students at accredited colleges and universities in Washington state who have demonstrated interest in journalism are eligible to apply. For more information go to our Student Opportunities page.

Northwest Journalists of Color Training Fund

With inflation rising, a potential recession, journalists being laid off and the growing constraints on local newsroom budgets, it has become increasingly difficult for journalists of color to access much-needed training and professional development opportunities.

To address these challenges, the Seattle Association of Black Journalists, PeriodistasNW and AAJA Seattle are establishing a Northwest Journalists of Color Training Fund that will raise and disperse funds to professional journalists of color to use for training. This fund will be in addition to the NJC Scholarship for students, which is an endowed fund. Donate here

Students at accredited colleges and universities in Washington state who are current AAJA members are eligible to apply.  For more information go to our Student Opportunities page.

Lunar New Year Banquet

The beginning of the year is a chance to celebrate the previous year’s accomplishments and look forward to new possibilities. AAJA Seattle’s annual Lunar New Year Banquet offers members, media companies and new supporters a chance to mingle and bid on fantastic items donated to the Silent Auction!

Professional development

AAJA Seattle offers programs to support the growth of student journalists and professionals. Locally, the chapter puts on evening and weekend workshops, including an annual Speed Mentoring Workshop. And through its parent organization, members can upgrade their skills through a host of programs, including the Executive Leadership Program (ELP), the national convention and J Camp.

AAJA Seattle also offers grants to mid-career members for leadership and skills training. For more information, go to our 30th Anniversary Fund page.
